Steve Smith is set to assume a new role for the Sydney Sixers in BBL|06, taking on the position of official ambassador for the side.
With his role as Captain of the Australian side and his playing commitments this summer meaning he won’t get to appear in the magenta, Smith will focus his attention on promoting and supporting the Sixers this season instead.
“It’s great to be involved as an ambassador with the Sixers” Smith said.
“I will be promoting the Sixers as much as possible, trying to get people out to the games, trying to up our members as much as possible, and obviously supporting the Sixers in every aspect that I can.”
Smith has captained the side for a number of games since the BBL started, and lifted the trophy for the magenta following their historic BBL|01 championship. He was also part of the side that won the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in 2012.
“My favourite memory of playing for the Sixers would probably have to be the final in Perth.
“It was just a great moment to hit the winning runs in the first ever Big Bash and all the guys running out onto the field after what was a great performance.”
Following a disappointing BBL|05, Smith believes the Sixers will be able to return to form this season, with the help of some key players.
“I do expect the Sixers to improve. We’ve got the team to be right up there at the end and hopefully the guys can play to the best of their ability and win this year’s Big Bash.
“Brad Haddin will have a big season for the Sixers. You know, he’s only playing T20 cricket now, he’s very relaxed, he goes out there and plays with absolute freedom.
“Nic Maddinson is starting to understand his game very well and hopefully we can see him have a big year for the Sixers and hopefully progress into the Australian team at some point as well.”
The Sixers begin their BBL|06 campaign on December 20, with tickets on sale now.
