The Sydney Sixers have named their men’s and women’s teams for the upcoming First Nations T20 Cup, which is set take place on Dharug Country later this month.
The competition, which will see the Sixers face their crosstown rivals, Sydney Thunder, will be held at Blacktown International Sports Park (BISP) on Wednesday, February 26.
Both sides are set to feature a number of experienced players, including a handful of players who took part in last year’s National Indigenous Cricket Championship (NICC).
Roxsanne Van-Veen, Piper Hooke, Mackenzie Keeler were all part of last summer’s title winning NSW side, defeating Queensland to claim the victory, with Van-Veen the leading wicket-taker for the tournament.
Matt Carvosso and Brett Russell were additionally part of the NSW men’s squad, who finished runners-up against Western Australia at the championship, which took place on Arrernte Country in Mparntwe (Alice Springs).
Both the men’s and women’s team will wear playing shirts matching those worn by the Sixers WBBL and BBL teams during their First Nations matches this season, bearing artwork designed by local artist and Wiradjuri woman, Lua Pellegrini.
In alignment with the Cricket NSW Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), the First Nations T20 Cup aims to increase opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to thrive in the elite cricket and community cricket pathways.
